Eligibility Requirements 

Natural Gas Water Heater Eligibility

To qualify for a rebate on a natural gas water heater, you must:

• Be a residential natural gas customer of Xcel Energy in Colorado
• Installation can be self-install or by a contractor on Xcel's list of current Water Heater Contractors

Electric Water Heater Eligibility

To qualify for a rebate on an electric heat pump water heater, you must:

• Be a residential electric customer of Xcel Energy in Colorado
• In order to be eligible for a rebate, a mixing valve MUST be installed for all heat pump water heaters, regardless of the rebate tier.

Medium Draw Standard Tank Water Heater

• 0.64 Uniform Energy Factor Rating (UEF)
• Energy Savings vs. Minimum Standards: 10% to 20%
• Expected Energy Savings Over Average Equipment Lifetime: Up to $500 over 8 to 10 years
• Major Advantages: Lower upfront cost
• Rebate: $50

High Draw Standard Tank Water Heater

• 0.68 Uniform Energy Factor Rating (UEF)
• Energy Savings vs. Minimum Standards: 10% to 20%
• Expected Energy Savings Over Average Equipment Lifetime: Up to $500 over 8 to 10 years
• Major Advantages: Lower upfront cost
• Rebate: $50

Tankless Water Heater

• 0.87 Uniform Energy Factor Rating (UEF)
• Energy Savings vs. Minimum Standards: 45% to 60%
• Expected Energy Savings Over Average Equipment Lifetime: Up to $1,800 over 20 years
• Major Advantages: Unlimited supply of hot water
• Rebate: $100

 

New Equipment Benefits for Electric Customers

Electric Heat Pump Water Heater

• Energy Savings vs. Minimum Standards: 65% to electric resistance
• Expected Energy Savings Over Average Equipment Lifetime: Up to $900 over 12 years
• Major Advantages: Most efficient electric fuel option
• Rebate: $600

 

Smart Electric Heat Pump Water Heater

• Energy Savings vs. Minimum Standards: 65% to electric resistance
• Expected Energy Savings Over Average Equipment Lifetime: Up to $900 over 12 years
• Major Advantages: Most efficient electric fuel option
• Rebate: $800

In order to qualify for the $800 rebate, the water heater must be eligible for the Smart Water Heater program. Models that are not eligible qualify for the $600 rebate.

Qualifying Equipment & Installation for Electric Customers

Review the list of eligible Heat Pump Water Heaters .

• Electric Heat Pump Water Heater: $600 rebate
• Smart Electric Heat Pump Water Heater: $800 rebate

Your water heater must be installed by a participating contractor from Xcle's list of current Water Heater Contractors .

Water heater may be installed in a new or existing home. There is no limit to the number of units installed in a home.

Indirect units, commercial water heaters and rated heat pump water heaters with storage volume greater than 80 gallons are not eligible.

 

Qualifying Equipment and Installation Options  

Natural Gas Water Heaters

• Choose how you want to submit the rebate application: visit the online form opens , download the application , or ask your contractor.
• Retail instant rebates are also available through the Xcel Energy Store .

Heat Pump Water Heaters

• Ask your contractor for the rebate application.

Water Heater Rebate Process

• Complete one rebate application per unit of qualifying equipment.
• Submit rebate application to us by the deadline - September 30 of the year after the qualifying equipment was installed.
